Herewith a recording of myself performing “Cameo No. 3” by the black, English composer, Samuel Coleridge Taylor (1875-1912). Taylor begun playing the violin, aged 5, and joined a choir at a church in Croydon, where he was mentored and prepared for admittance into the Royal College of Music. Taylor became a prolific composer, winning prizes in many competitions. Taylor, like his American contemporaries, experienced racial tensions. He utilised his music composition of works such as “Twenty-four Negro Melodies” as a means of expressing his felt experiences and emotions within his struggle against the racial prejudices of English Society.
